Is a Liberal Arts Degree Useless?

Of course you may already know that I am in love with Penelope Trunk’s blog, but I am especially in love with this post, How to Manage a College Education.

You know, I’m starting to believe that college is a big scam. I have a degree in History. That is a great degree to have if you want to teach history. It’s also not bad if you want to go on to a Master’s or Doctorate program in Librarianship, Archives, or other research/information fields. If you just want to get a decent 9-5 job with the potential to move up, a History degree will not help you.

If you have a history degree AND you know somebody, or knows somebody who knows somebody, then you’re fine.  That is the secret no one tells you in college, you find a job through your personal network, NOT from getting a college education.
